Our Mission
It's quite simple really. We want to make as many people laugh as possible, simply because laughing is good for us. (There is even research showlng that just looking forward to laughing makes us happier). 'We' is MIND in EXETER & EAST DEVON, a local charity promoting mental health and providing support for those finding their way to recovering from mental distress.
But it's more complicated too...
We want to get people laughing to improve their mental health, so our mission is really to help people improve their own and their communities wellbeing, and make Devon the capital of laughter and feeling good. Which opens up lots of possibilties... there are so many things that we can all do to help us be mentally healthy, and we want to include as many of them as possible under the banner of laughter and Off the Wall.
So - we want to encourage people to get involved in doing their own Off the Wall events - because getting involved, working with others, being creative, learning new skills, making other people laugh is good for us too.
We want to celebrate Good Mood Food - share the fact that what and HOW we eat makes a big difference to how we feel.
We want to make exercise and physical health fun - because looking after our bodies also means looking after our MIND's. We have ideas about some On the Ball at Off the Wall events, which will launch with a football tournament in the autumn... (Watch this space)
In the slip stream of all these giggles, chuckles, munching and sweating we want to get some messages and information out into the world, to help people help themselves (which is the best way to get help).
Oh, and by the way, we want to change the world... We want to help people not be so wary of the very idea of mental health and mental distress, so that the appalling stigma, discrimination and ignorance about the subject can be a thing of the past. Because much of what people experience when they are going through times of emotional distress and ill-health is really no laughing matter.
It is one in four of us who will need help to recover our mental health after periods of distress, after all.
